During South Africa's nationwide lockdown in response to COVID-19, the Lunchbox Fund will work with all our partners to offer relief feeding if/as this becomes possible. This will by necessity dovetail with (and meet all the regulatory standards of) a government-led national response to the nutrition crisis as it emerges. The Lunchbox Fund is looking ahead to the impact the COVID-19 crisis will have on children's nutrition and education. We know food-insecurity will deepen and so will child hunger, and that the economic impacts on our nation will be far-reaching. Almost 10 million children in South Africa receive their only guaranteed meal for the day at school and will be in dire need of nutrition support the minute schools re-open. Many additional children will have fallen into vulnerability in the wake of COVID-19. School nutrition will offer an essential point of intervention to help secure children's return to health and learning as rapidly as possible.
