With COVID-19 lockdowns still in effect, Mandela Day 2020 required a new approach to giving. HomeChoice rose to the occasion with the launch of “Take Action and Inspire Change” — a fully virtual campaign that invited employees to unite as a team, from a distance, and support critical community causes.

The goal was clear: make a meaningful impact despite physical separation, while reinforcing the company’s values of compassion, collaboration, and civic responsibility.

The Project

HomeChoice partnered with Brownie Points to host and track a multi-cause Mandela Day campaign that empowered employees to support causes aligned with urgent community needs — including food relief, health, and early childhood development.

Employees could choose from a set of tangible giving actions:

  • Donate R67 or more toward PPE for ECD centres
  • Buy breakfast/lunch from 78 on Main to feed a child
  • Donate dry food to unite against hunger
  • Donate blood to save a life
  • Gift a children’s storybook to a child in Lavender Hill

The campaign hosted 8 mission options in total, allowing employees to find causes that matched their personal passions and lockdown realities. All participation was logged digitally and celebrated collectively.

Success

  • Launched 8 virtual missions tailored for remote Mandela Day giving
  • Engaged 50 employees across the organisation
  • Supported five core causes, including education, hunger, and health
  • Reinforced team culture through shared action — even while apart
  • Aligned social impact with HomeChoice’s values of community care and inclusion

This campaign showed how creative thinking, digital tools, and heartfelt intention can keep corporate citizenship alive — even in lockdown.
