The first case of local transmission has been reported in South Africa. The impact that Coronavirus (COVID-19) will have on vulnerable communities will be detrimental. The high rates of HIV, TB and malnutrition mean that the fatality rate is likely to be much higher than has been reported in other countries. Transmission rate is also likely to be gravely concerning. The small living spaces, often housing many people in each room, are no place to be quarentined. Yet, because of the high rate of poverty, many people will not be able to stay home from work and will instead travel on taxis and pay for the ride in cash before returning home to their families.
This is why Project Playground is seeking support in reducing the impact of Coronavirus on the townships in Cape Town. We aim to: (1) provide educational materials about the virus to members of the community, (2) distribute hygiene products for families, (3) create activities for children out of school and, (3) provide food hampers for struggling families who normally rely on school lunches and Project Playground dinners.
What we need:
-Funding
-Non-perishable food
-Soap, sanitiser
-Books, magazines, educational activities
-Printing of information leaflets
As an organisation that works towards changing communities, this is our moment to rise up and lead. We are requesting the support of other organisations and individuals to partner with Project Playground to "flatten the curve" and reduce the dramatic impact that Coronavirus can have on these communities.
